NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – New York’s first confirmed case of the variant of COVID-19, originally discovered in South Africa, was found in a Nassau county that lives in the tiny hamlet of Glen Head – of 5,000 residents in the city of Oyster Bay.

The resident who tested positive never traveled to South Africa. In fact, she never left New York, CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan reported on Monday.

“This is not a reason to freak out, but it is a reminder to keep using common sense,” said Laura Curran, chief executive officer for Nassau County. “All protocols were followed for contact tracing and quarantine. The person was not hospitalized. “

COVID VACCINATION

CBS2 learned that the woman who contracted the South African variant has been quarantined and has been recovering since she tested positive two weeks ago.

Local shopkeepers say they keep calm but focus.

“A setback. Hopefully it’s just an isolated incident,” said Frank Clara, who owns a pizzeria in Glen Head.

“As long as he or she is quarantined, we’re in a better place,” said Steve Yagudayev, who runs a barber shop.

“It’s still very dangerous. We don’t know if it will actually get any worse, ”said Antonio Guardabo, a delicatessen worker.

CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

Dr. Anthony Fauci warns against complacency as these variants may spread faster and be less responsive to vaccines.

“I’m not trying to scare people. I say we have to be prepared that variables are in place and we could get another increase, ”said Fauci.

The variant spread follows the news from Jones Beach, where a small number of vaccines issued on February 15 were ineffective because they were stored at the wrong temperature.

The New York Health Department said 1,379 doses were administered that day in Jones Beach. Of these, 81 were considered ineffective due to temperature fluctuations during transport.
