GEDDES, NY (WSYR-TV) – Starting Wednesday, the Expo Center at the New York State Fairgrounds opens as a mass vaccination site where thousands of Central New Yorkers will receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. However, dates for Wednesday have already been booked.
The New York State Fairgrounds has played an important role throughout the pandemic, serving as a testing site, food distribution point, and now a mass vaccination site.
The “Am I Eligible” app enables New Yorkers to find out when and where to get the COVID-19 vaccine
Thousands of Central New Yorkers who are in Groups 1A and 1B on the state vaccination schedule are eligible to be admitted there. This includes a wide range of people such as educators, first responders, public safety and transit workers, and others on the front lines such as grocery store workers.
On Tuesday, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo passed the CDC guidelines and now offered the vaccine to people 65 and over. These people specifically go to pharmacies like Kinney Drugs and Wegmans where appointments are already full.
The main problem is that New York State only receives 300,000 doses a week from the federal government and more than seven million people are eligible to receive the vaccine in the state.
Heads of State urge people to be patient as the state expects more doses from the government.
“Our pod can do a lot more. We’ll open an additional pod if we need to do more. Pharmacies can do more. Family doctors can get vaccines. That comes. But we need the vaccine supply to really activate this additional infrastructure, ”said Ryan McMahon, executive of Onondaga County.
The state operates the grounds on the fairgrounds, and Onondaga County provides the staff.
You will be asked to make your appointments for this website through the state website.
