To compile the ranking, the researchers examined data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid for more than 4,500 hospitals across the country. The researchers then analyzed how everyone behaves across 32 conditions and procedures, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, respiratory failure, sepsis, and stroke.
In a press release announcing the 2021 list, Healthgrades said patients treated in senior hospitals are 27.4 percent less likely to die than if treated in unrated hospitals.
It also means that if all hospitals performed similarly to Healthgrades America’s Best Hospitals, 167,235 lives could be saved, the press release said.
After identifying the eligible hospitals, Healthgrades took a number of steps to create the final ranking. Read the full methodology for the leaderboard.
“Consumers know more than ever the importance of researching hospitals and finding the best organization to meet their health needs,” said Dr. Brad Bowman, Chief Medical Officer of Healthgrades, in a press release.
“Especially in this era of COVID-19, we commend recipients … for their commitment to achieving superior results and protecting their communities.”
