Pack Of Bicyclists Now Sought In Pair Of Assaults In Manhattan – CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The horrific attack on a man and his mother in their vehicle in Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon went viral.

Now a new video shows what is believed to be the same group of cyclists who attacked a taxi driver just five minutes earlier, CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reported Thursday.

That horrific scene on 29th St & 5th Ave yesterday – an arbitrary and unprovoked attack on this taxi driver. (The bikers then did this with 2 other cars in 5th place.) If anyone else witnessed this – please share your videos with the 13th Detective Squad! @kaptainjac

The attackers swarm around the cab on Fifth Avenue between 28th and 29th Streets and break the windows. A cyclist takes his bike and meets the taxi driver in the back.

The driver’s family, too traumatized to speak on camera, shared pictures of his bruises and broken windows, which cost the already struggling taxi driver more than $ 2,000 to repair.

Max Torgovnick, the Upper East Side man behind the wheel during the last attack on Tuesday, urges the city to act, especially after learning that the same group of cyclists attacked a taxi driver minutes before they were chased.

“I’ve lived here as a New Yorker for 36 years. I feel like I am entitled to get answers from the city about what made this possible and what they will do to make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else, ”said Torgovnick.

Police have released still pictures of cyclists they are looking for and made at least one arrest, a 15-year-old boy. He was charged with riot and criminal calamity.

“I don’t know that I want you to go to jail. I don’t know that would help them, ”said Torgovnick. “But there needs to be accountability and a way to do it in a healthy, socially productive way.”

Torgovnick and his 74-year-old mother were driving their BMW SUV down Fifth Avenue on 22nd Street in the Flatiron District when the group of cyclists surrounded them.

Some held on to the SUV for a ride until, as Torgovnick said, a cyclist fell and sparked an angry mob attack. He said the people broke windows and threw their bikes on the hood. A cyclist ran to the windshield and smashed it with the full weight of his body while her bike friends laughed and cheered.

“When he smashed the glass, my biggest fear at the time was that they would get in the car, pull me out and get killed,” said Torgovnick. “Everyone was off their bikes, surrounded the car, knocked on the glass, knocked on the hood and shouted, ‘Get out of the car! Shut the window ‘

“Before I knew it, my mother was crying. The 911 operator shouts into the phone: “Help! Send help! We will die. They will kill us! ‘”, He added.

On Thursday, CBS2 brought Torgovnick’s request for response to Mayor Bill de Blasio.

When asked what the city will do to ensure that such an incident does not happen again, the mayor said, “Hazel, this is absolutely unacceptable. You have these teenagers doing something that’s just wrong, period. We need to keep teaching our young people better and better. It is up to all of us, but we also have to have consequences, so in this case there will be consequences. “

However, some critics doubt that the consequences will be enough.
